Of all the Marketing Strategies available, the most successful is arguably a well designed and well executed Direct Marketing Campaign! However, your marketing dollars are not working for you if you do not make sure the campaign is managed professionally.
So how can you ensure your outbound telemarketing success? Here are a couple of simple, but vitally important, tips:
- Define your desired result;
- Know your target market;
- Forecast your expected % success (or know if you are actually conducting market research);
- Determine if prospecting or selling (don’t do both in the same call);
- Calculate your required Return on Investment;
- Have a call script;
- Pre-empt objections;
- Get clear on a simple purpose of the call;
- Throw the script out!
- Measure the results

I have been having trouble getting the results I want from my telemarketing attempts, so was googling for some hints and stumbled across this article. Thank you so much for sharing. It shows me that I hadn’t actually put enough thought into what I was doing, or really trying to achieve. I had been trying to find out all the information I needed AND make a sale all in the one call, and people weren’t responding. In fact most of the time I’m not getting past the Receptionist. I can find out who I am supposed to talk to but when I then ask to speak to them I get shut down. This week I’m going to try and just get the name of the contact first, and then later in the week call back and directly ask for them, that way the receptionist wont be so aware that I am telemarketing. I’ve also sat down and written a list of some potential objections and how I can handle them so that I have it as a reference.
As I’m a bit short on cash I think I will give these things a go, and if I still dont get the results I might get in touch for some help on my call script, especially as you’re offering a discount at the moment.
Thanks again, Sharni
Hi Sharni, thanks for your comments! A quick tip to get past the “gatekeeper”, make friends with them and give them lots of info about why you are calling!! Often they get overwhelmed and put you through. Also you are showing them that you have respect for them and confidence in what you are doing! Let me know if you need any more tips!

(…) though unrelated to this blog, still http://www.stellarstrategies.com.au is one relavant source of tips on this topic(…)
Dear Author http://www.stellarstrategies.com.au !
And there is a similar analogue?
Dear lunnyekratery, good question!! I’ m not sure if you mean Successful Telemarketing as opposed to a haphazard/unplanned TM campaign, which by the way would be the difference of 5% compared with 30-35% in our company’s experience; or perhaps you are referring to my broad sweeping statement about TM being the most targeted way to reach your desired audience? In my experience Advertising revenues from: Direct Mail campaigns produce between 1-5% success; Word of Mouth and Customer Referrals is less than 20%; and in the UK recent research (from IAB-Internet Ad Bureau & PWC-Price Waterhouse Coopers & WARC-World Ad Research Centre) rated Social Media success as 23.5%. As an experienced Telemarketing company we can confirm that a targeted well structured campaign will produce results of between 30-35% success, and as a matter of fact we often acheive 50%+. However, the campaign MUST be well designed and executed and the market properly identified. By using our tips you can help increase those 5% unorganised results up to 30-35%!!

Superb article, I definetly read this really slow. People should never forget the importance marketing. And from time to time marketing cannot do such big harm, just try it.
Thanks Karie – you are right, if you want your business to grow, Marketing is very important. BUT at the same time it is also important to utilise effective marketing skills so that you are enhancing your business, not harming it!
